The landing page hero is a 4-variable puzzle
Promise, specificity, mechanism, CTA — and how to test them one at a time.

The four variables
Every high-converting hero answers four questions, in four sentences or fewer:
- Promise — the outcome, in the reader's language.
- Specificity — for whom, in what timeframe, at what cost.
- Mechanism — a plausible reason we can deliver it.
- CTA — the exact next step.
If any of these is fuzzy, the page leaks.
Testing one at a time
Most 'A/B tests' fail because they change three things and learn nothing. Change one variable per round. Four rounds is enough to land a hero that beats the incumbent by 20–40% in almost every account we've run this on.
Common traps
- Clever over clear. Curiosity headlines look sharp; they usually lose on real audiences.
- Novelty for novelty's sake. New format, no new signal. Skip.
- CTA copy neglect. "Get started" is a 3% haircut on your conversion rate you paid for by inertia.
